SUMMARY:Safe and Supportive Use of Social Media in the Aftermath of a Suicide
DESCRIPTION:Safe and Supportive Use of Social Media in the Aftermath of a Suicide\n\n\n\n\n\nDate & Time\nSep 19\, 2024 09:00 AM in Pacific Time (US and Canada)\n\n\n\nDescription\nMindWise and Riverside Trauma Center are pleased to welcome Dr. Jo Bell as the keynote speaker for our September Suicide Prevention Month event. News of a death by suicide explodes like a bomb on social media\, the impact of which can be felt around the world. Emerging research has shown that activity very often prompts multiple users to respond\, rapidly sharing posts and ruminating publicly about the nature and reasons for the death (Bell and Westoby\, 2021). Dr. Jo Bell’s work has established that news of a suicide spreads rapidly via social media\, increasing the number of those exposed and affected exponentially. Important positive and negative effects arise from this. The ways in which people post\, comment and respond about a death by suicide in this way impacts suicide contagion and has the potential to complicate grief. Young people in particular are susceptible to this. This work also established that social media can be harnessed to manage trauma and alleviate grief. This training is aimed at professionals and practitioners who work in services supporting those affected by suicide. This may include public health\, coroners\, media professionals\, emergency responders\, mental health professionals\, social workers\, funeral directors\, pastoral care providers from schools\, colleges and universities\, bereavement services\, 3rd sector and voluntary organizations. Attendees will take away new evidence-based knowledge of: – The uniqueness of suicide bereavement – The harmful and protective effects of social media use in the aftermath of a suicide – How social media use can be harnessed to manage trauma\, alleviate grief and reach those who need support – Guidance and recommendations for prevention policy and practice (including developing media strategies) Webinar attendees will come away with recommendations and guidance for practice on how to mitigate against harmful effects and promote positive effects of social media use following a suicide.\n\n\n\n\nRegister HERE

SUMMARY:For Youth\, By Youth: How California is Co-Creating Innovative Mental Health Campaigns
DESCRIPTION:Date & Time\nFeb 5\, 2025 12:00 PM in Pacific Time (US and Canada)\n\n\nDescription\nNever a Bother is California’s groundbreaking youth suicide prevention campaign–designed with\, for\, and by youth and their caregivers–transforming the way government\, partners\, communities\, and individuals support and affirm youth mental health in response to the growing crisis across our country. Partnering with youth co-creators across California and the award-winning musician and influencer Megan Thee Stallion\, the Never a Bother campaign is an example of how governments\, community organizations\, and youth themselves can lead critical conversations and engage audiences on messages and calls to action that authentically resonate with youth. Since its launch\, the Never a Bother campaign has become a catalyst for a statewide movement supporting and affirming youth mental health\, their caregivers\, and the many partners who support them statewide. Join Civilian\, the agency behind the work\, along with campaign youth advisors and guest speakers from the California Department of Public Health and the California Health and Human Services Agency in an interactive webinar sharing key learnings about the campaign’s design\, creative\, messaging\, implementation\, engagement\, and more. We’ll share key insights and translatable takeaways for any organization or individual across the country working to support youth mental health and suicide prevention efforts. We’ll also discuss the benefits of co-creation with diverse audiences and youth\, the ins-and-outs of how to do it\, and how unconventional partnerships can deliver results. Featured speakers: ● Camellia Mortezazadeh\, MPH\, Civilian Agency- Director of Strategy ● Pete Levine\, Civilian Agency- Director Client Service ● Varinda Gupta\, Civilian Agency- Project Lead ● Shailen Dawkins\, Never a Bother Campaign Youth Advisor ● Dr. Sohil Sud\, California Health and Human Services Agency ● Darcy Pickens\, California Department of Public Health

SUMMARY:The Office of Suicide Prevention 2025 Biennial Needs Assessment - Survey
DESCRIPTION:The 2025 Biennial OSP Needs Assessment Survey will remain open for one more week so please don’t miss this opportunity to share your input and feedback. To access the survey\, please click here. If you have already responded\, thank you for your time and feedback. \n  \nThe OSP has four strategic priorities: Communications\, Safe Environments\, Crisis Response & Postvention\, and Continuing Education and Training. These priorities arose from feedback within our 2023 OSP Needs Assessment\, as well as state and national suicide prevention plans. \n  \nThe purpose of the survey is to obtain information on which focus areas\, activities\, and types of support within these strategic priorities will best support your suicide prevention work at the State and local level. Your input will help inform future suicide prevention efforts as we learn more about the evolving needs of our statewide partners. The information we obtain through the survey responses will be summarized and shared back out via our program list serv and on our webpage. \n  \nThe survey should take approximately 10 minutes to complete. While not a requirement\, there is an opportunity to provide your contact information at the end of the survey if you’d like to share more with the OSP and/or engage in a post-survey interview or follow-up conversation. \n  \nPlease feel free to share this email and survey information with other suicide prevention colleagues. We would like to hear from everyone – prevention staff\, managers\, clinicians\, and leadership – about your current strengths\, challenges and most importantly\, how we can best support you in your essential work. \n  \nHere is a link to this survey. The survey will remain open until COB on Friday\, May 16.
